Expert guidance to help you find the right legal support

How to find the right solicitor

Understanding Legal 500 rankings

The Legal 500 is an independent guide that ranks law firms and solicitors based on client feedback and peer reviews. Tier 1 firms are considered market leaders, while Tier 2 and 3 firms are also highly regarded specialists.

Individual solicitors may be ranked as "Leading Individual", "Next Generation Partner", or "Rising Star" based on their expertise and reputation.

What to look for in a family law solicitor

  • Relevant specialisms – ensure they handle cases like yours (high net worth, children matters, international etc.)
  • Experience level – consider whether you need a senior partner or if an associate would be suitable
  • Location – while many matters can be handled remotely, local knowledge can be valuable
  • Communication style – you'll be working closely with them, so rapport matters
  • Fee structure – understand their charging rates and ask about fixed fees where possible

What to expect at your first meeting

Most solicitors offer a free or fixed-fee initial consultation. This is your opportunity to:

  • Explain your situation and what you hope to achieve
  • Understand your legal options and likely timescales
  • Get an estimate of costs and discuss funding options
  • Assess whether you feel comfortable working with them

Bring any relevant documents (marriage certificate, financial information, correspondence) and prepare a list of questions in advance.

Questions to ask

  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • Who will be handling my case day-to-day?
  • How do you charge and what are your hourly rates?
  • What is the likely total cost and timescale?
  • How will you keep me updated on progress?
  • What alternatives to court are available?
